CSCRS Research Operating Grant Applications
The Canadian Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Research Operating Grant has been awarded annually since 2008 to support colorectal surgery research in Canada. More than fifteen grants and over $230,000 have been awarded to colorectal surgeons, general surgeons, and trainees resulting in high quality research projects and many publications. The CSCRS is pleased to offer up to $10,000 in funding for research projects and we look forward to receiving your application.

Eligibility and terms:
- Principal or supervising investigator is a CSCRS member in good standing, and must have been a member for at least one year prior to application
- Principal or supervising investigator is a general surgeon with subspecialty certification of training in colon and rectal surgery
- Research project should culminate in a manuscript to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal
- Winning proposals shall be presented at the annual CSCRS research dinner at the Canadian Surgery Forum in September of the award year
- Winners shall present their progress at one year after project initiation at the annual CSCRS research dinner
- Completed projects shall be submitted to CSCRS for presentation at the Canadian Surgery Forum
- Manuscripts submitted for publication shall acknowledge the award from the CSCRS
- In lieu of publication (or acceptance thereof) within two years of award granted, a report shall be submitted to the CSCRS Research Chair outlining progress towards publication submission
- Salary support for investigators is not permitted, and budgets should be direct cost only (indirect costs will not be considered)
- CSCRS Research Committee shall use its discretion as to whether one or both awards will be given each year
- Research projects are to be approved by institutional research ethics board prior to initiation (not required prior to application)
Application Process and Materials Requested
- CV of the principal investigator (and of the supervising investigator if the principal investigator is a trainee)
- Letter of support from principal or supervising investigator’s Head of Department of Surgery
- Detailed description of the research proposal submitted as a single pdf as follows (maximum 8 pages):

- Title page with contact information, qualifications, and titles of all investigators (principal investigator first, then supervising investigator, then all other investigators) with corresponding investigator specified
- Page 2
- One page executive summary of the research proposal
- Pages 3-8
- Primary research question, objective or hypothesis
- Significance of the project, including summary of current knowledge on the topic, anticipated outcome, and clinical relevance
- Preliminary work completed by principal or supervising investigator, if any
- Methodology and experimental design, including tentative timetable, means of statistical analysis, sample size/power calculation if applicable and clinical interpretation, and potential limitations
- References cited
- A detailed budget

Application Review
The CSCRS Research Chair and several CSCRS members from across Canada will review all applications received by the deadline and score them according to a standardized method and score sheet, adapted from CIHR criteria as follows:
